Fault finding electrician for Fleet & Hampshire.
Tripping fuseboard, dead sockets, flickering lights, lost power, burning smell — when the electrics aren't behaving, JSC Electrical investigates methodically and repairs where possible. Local to Fleet, covering Church Crookham, Farnborough, Aldershot and the surrounding area.
Safety first
If you smell burning, see sparks or visible damage — stop using the circuit
Switch the supply off at the main switch on your consumer unit, then get in touch.
Don't keep resetting a breaker that won't stay on — it's protecting you from a real fault. Don't try to remove a damaged socket or switch, and don't open the consumer unit cover. Email photos if it's easier than describing it.
Quick answers
What should I do if my electrics keep tripping?
Don't keep resetting the breaker — a repeated trip means a real fault.
At the consumer unit, identify which breaker has dropped. Unplug everything on that circuit and reset the breaker once. If it holds with nothing plugged in, the fault is in an appliance — reintroduce items one by one to find the culprit. If it trips with nothing plugged in, the fault is in the fixed wiring and needs investigating by an electrician.
Is repeated tripping dangerous?
The trip itself is the protection working — but the underlying fault can be serious.
Repeated tripping points to leakage to earth, an overloaded circuit, a damaged cable or a failing component. Continuing to reset it (or replacing the device with a higher rating) removes the protection without fixing the cause — that's where shock, overheating or fire risk can develop. Get it traced rather than ignored.
Tracing the cause, properly
JSC Electrical works through faults methodically — visual checks, isolation testing, and circuit testing to pinpoint the cause rather than just guessing. You'll get a clear explanation of what's wrong and what's needed to fix it.
If you can, email a photo of the fuseboard or affected accessory before the visit. It often helps narrow down the issue and means we arrive prepared.
Common faults we investigate
- RCD or breaker that keeps tripping
- Whole circuit dead — sockets or lights out
- Single dead socket or switch
- Flickering or dimming lights
- Buzzing accessories — sockets, switches, fittings
- Burning smell at a socket, switch or appliance
- Hot socket faceplate or warm light fitting
- Shower or immersion not heating
- Outdoor or garden circuit lost in wet weather
- Failed EICR items to track down
If any of these sound familiar…
Don't put it off — small faults grow into bigger ones, and some carry real safety risk.
RCD won't reset
The breaker drops the moment you flip it on.
Dead sockets
One socket, one room or a whole ring has gone out.
Flickering lights
Single fitting or whole circuit — often loose terminations.
Burning smell
Switch off the affected circuit and call. Don't ignore it.
Lost power upstairs / downstairs
Part of the house out, rest of it fine.
Buzzing socket or switch
Usually a loose connection — risk of overheating.
Hot faceplate
A warm socket cover is a red flag — don't use it.
Wet weather trips
Outdoor circuit drops every time it rains — water ingress.
From first call to repair
No guessing — methodical investigation, then a clear explanation of what was wrong.
Quick chat
Call or email with a description and a photo if it helps. We'll triage and book a visit.
Investigation
On-site visual checks, isolation testing and circuit testing to pinpoint the cause.
Diagnose & explain
You'll get a clear explanation of what's wrong and what's involved to fix it.
Repair
Straightforward repairs are usually completed the same visit. Larger work is quoted separately.
Fault finding questions
Why does my RCD keep tripping?
Common causes include a faulty appliance leaking current to earth, water in an outdoor socket or accessory, a damaged cable, or a degraded component on one of the circuits the RCD protects. Repeated tripping is the RCD doing its job — it should be investigated by an electrician rather than reset and ignored.
Is it dangerous if my fuseboard keeps tripping?
A breaker that won't stay reset is protecting you from a real fault — shock, overload or fire risk depending on the cause. Don't keep resetting it. Get the issue investigated by an electrician before continuing to use the affected circuit.
What should I do if I smell burning at a socket or switch?
Switch the supply off at the main switch on your consumer unit. Don't keep using the affected circuit, don't try to remove the socket or switch, and don't open the consumer unit cover. Get in touch — this needs investigating before it's used again.
How quickly can you come out?
It depends on current workload — get in touch with a brief description and, where useful, a photo. Fault calls are prioritised where safety is a concern (burning smell, sparks, repeated tripping that won't reset).
Do you charge a call-out fee for fault finding?
Diagnostic visits are priced clearly on the phone before booking. If the repair is straightforward and can be completed on the same visit, it's usually included; larger repairs are quoted separately.
